For 25 years DAVE BARRY was a syndicated columnist whose work appeared in more than 500 newspapers in the United States and abroad. In 1988 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary. Many people are still trying to figure out how this happened. Dave has also written a total of 30 books, although virtually none of them contain useful information. Two of his books were used as the basis for the CBS TV sitcom “Dave’s World,” in which Harry Anderson played a much taller version of Dave.

Dave plays lead guitar in a literary rock band called the Rock Bottom Remainders, whose other members include Stephen King, Amy Tan, Ridley Pearson and Mitch Albom. They are not musically skilled, but they are extremely loud. Dave has also made many TV appearances, including one on the David Letterman show where he proved that it is possible to set fire to a pair of men’s underpants with a Barbie doll.

FRANK DELANEY, who lives in Kent, Connecticut, was born in Tipperary, Ireland. After a brief career in banking he became a news broadcaster with RTE radio and television, and then on the BBC, covering the recent war known as the Irish “Troubles.” Some years later, in London, he inaugurated award winning BBC shows on language and writing. He has interviewed more than three thousand writers, including many of the significant authors of our time, and has judged many literary awards including the famous Booker Prize.

Delaney has written six books of non-fiction, twelve novels, one novella, and has had short stories published in magazines and collections. He has edited anthologies of essays and poetry, written screenplays – you may have seen the recent “Goodbye Mr. Chips” on Masterpiece Theater – and currently he is writing a series of novels, one a year, exploring his native Ireland’s presence in the twentieth century. The latest, “The Matchmaker of Kenmare”, has received rave reviews.

JUSTICE SANDRA DAY O’CONNOR was the first woman to sit on the Supreme Court of the United States. She is considered the most admired woman in America. She credits her grandmother’s confidence in her ability to succeed in any endeavor as her motivation for refusing to admit defeat. She attended Stanford Law School, where she graduated third in her class; first in her class was William Rehnquist. Her moderation had helped her as the centrist coalition-builder. She made it clear that she believes a courts role is to interpret and not to legislate.

“The power I exerted on the court depended on the power of my arguments, not my gender”.
