Sandra Day O’Connor
was the first woman and the 102nd person to sit on the
Supreme Court of the United States. She is considered the
most admired woman in America. She credits her grandmother’s
confidence in her ability to succeed in any endeavor as her
motivation for refusing to admit defeat. She met her
husband, John, at Stanford Law School, where she graduated
third in her class; first in her class was William
Rehnquist. Her moderation had helped her as the centrist
coalition-builder. She made it clear that she believes a
courts role is to interpret and not to legislate.
“The power I exerted on the court depended on the power of
my arguments, not my gender”.
