Andrew Fraknoi
is the author of Disney’s Wonderful World of Space,
an introduction to the fascination of astronomy for kids
from ages 10 to 85 (which we wrote with his son Alex).
Fraknoi is Chair of the Astronomy Department at Foothill
College and Senior Educator at the Astronomical Society of
the Pacific. Among his activities, he created and directed
Project ASTRO, a national program for bringing astronomy
(and astronomers) into 4th through 9th grade classrooms, and
is co-author of Voyages through the Universe, the
first college-level astronomy textbook with jokes. Among his
many honors, Fraknoi was selected as the 2007 California
Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Endowment. The
International Astronomical Union has named Asteroid 4859
“Asteroid Fraknoi” to recognize his contributions to the
public understanding of science (but he wants to reassure
everyone that it is a boring asteroid and NOT one that could
hit the Earth.)
