Tamim Ansary was born and raised in Afghanistan, son of the first American woman to marry an Afghan. He wrote about his divided life in a memoir West of Kabul, East of New York, chosen as San Francisco’s One City One Book selection for 2008. He also edited Snapshots, an anthology of short pieces by 15 young Afghan Americans of California, which has just been issued by Kajakai Press.

His own short fiction has appeared in Gettysburg Review, Rosebud, Zyzzyva, Prism International, and others. Ansary directs the San Francisco Writers Workshop, which has met every Tuesday since 1947. Currently he is working on a book subtitled World History Through Islamic Eyes, due from Public Affairs in 2009, by which time he expects to know the title.
