Tamim Ansary
was born and raised in Afghanistan, son of the first
American woman to marry an Afghan. He wrote about his
divided life in a memoir West of Kabul, East of New York,
chosen as San Francisco’s One City One Book selection for
2008. He also edited Snapshots, an anthology of short pieces
by 15 young Afghan Americans of California, which has just
been issued by Kajakai Press.
His own short fiction has appeared in Gettysburg Review,
Rosebud, Zyzzyva, Prism International, and others. Ansary
directs the San Francisco Writers Workshop, which has met
every Tuesday since 1947. Currently he is working on a book
subtitled World History Through Islamic Eyes, due from
Public Affairs in 2009, by which time he expects to know the
title.
